8 Best Rescues to Adopt a Cat in St. Petersburg

June is officially the ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and what better time could there be to bring home a feline friend in need? Whether you’re looking for a kitten, an older cat, or a feline somewhere in between, here are some of the best rescues to adopt a cat around St. Petersburg, Florida, and find your next companion. These are listed in no particular order.

Rita’s House of Rescues

Rita’s House of Rescues is the brainchild of Rita Ireland, who has run it on her own since 2017. She got into rescue as an assistant manager at Pet Supermarket, which is one of her adoption centers now. Customers of the store would come in with abandoned kittens, and Rita started taking them in, along with kittens found through TNVR programs. Rita specializes in bottle babies, pregnant mama cats and their kittens, but is also often looking for homes for adult cats that have come her way too.

Cat Kids Rescue

With multiple adoption locations, one primary spot being the PetSmart in St. Pete, Cat Kids Rescue is a feline-focused rescue that helps find cats and kittens their forever homes. Started by the founder when she realized she had a special knack for rehabilitating cats that would have been otherwise deemed “unadoptable,” Cat Kids Rescue became her passion. She’s continued helping over 1,400 of these sweet cats and kittens find homes every year since 2014.

You can see a current list of the available cats on their website, and they also allow adoptions through the PetSmart locations in Tyrone Mall in St. Pete and Largo, FL.

They go above and beyond to make adoption accessible and educational, benefitting the well-being of both the animals saved and adopted out, as well as the loving pet parents that take them on. This shelter also offers programs such as the Kitten Heroes Program and MEOW Now, and they additionally run a pet food pantry for households that may require some assistance in ensuring their pets have enough healthy food to eat.

Save Our Strays

Even having been selected by Jackson Galaxy himself as part of the Cat Pawsitive Program by GreaterGood.org, Save Our Strays is an impressive and reputable rescue that places the health and proper homing of its cats and kittens above all else. As long as their fosters have space, they refuse to turn away a single cat in need.

St. Francis Society Animal Rescue

Having saved over 20,000 pets from euthanasia since 2008, the St. Francis Society Rescue goes above and beyond to save cats and dogs and provide them with happy forever homes. Aside from protecting and caring for these animals in need, St. Francis even offers a unique Working Cat Program to help place feral cats in “working” homes, allowing them to live in accommodating situations for them to thrive, provide pest control, but also be under the watchful eye of an adoptive pet parent at a distance— something not many other rescues offer!

To adopt a cat from St. Francis Rescue, you can contact the staff to express interest in one of the cats housed in one of their adoption centers, contact your cat-of-interest’s current foster parent, or submit an online application if you’re interested in adopting a cat that is currently part of the Working Cat Program.

I would not agree that Cats Kids is a great rescue. I tried to adopt kittens from them and they would not respond. Rita’s and Friends of Strays are both worthy of donations and are very helpful.
